  • About

Exhibits of the first bicycles, the Wright Flyer, Aviation & into outer space with Mercury 7 Astronaut ''Deke'' Slayton. SEE: 100+ Bicycles, Pietenpol Airplane, Lunar Sample, Kids Area, & Gift Shop

The museum was founded in March 1999 by a core group of residents who wanted to honor Deke Slayton's memory in his hometown of Sparta, WI and to commemorate the county's rich bicycling heritage. The museum is a progression from the earliest patented bicycles to the Wright brothers bicycle shop, the Wright Flyer and into Outer Space.

The museum in part is a memorial to Donald ''Deke'' Slayton - an astronaut and NASA administrator who grew up on a farm outside of Sparta, WI. There are numerous artifacts on display including several of Deke's personal items such as his Mercury Spacesuit and even a Moon Rock!

The museum also recongnizes that Sparta is the Bicycle Capital of America. There are over 200 Bicycle exhibits from the very 1st bicycle to modern day bicycles. Exhibits trace the evolution of the bicycle throughout American history.

Kids of all ages love the bicycle museum and space suit display!
